Famous Airdrie Folk
Posted by webmaster on March 13 2005

A tentative list of some well-known (and less well-known) local folk.

Arthur J. Higgins was born on March 6, 1956 in Airdrie, Scotland. He studied at Scotland’s Strathclyde University from 1974 to 1978, where he gained a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in biochemistry. He is Chairman of the Executive Board of Schering AG and Chairman of the Board of Management of the future Bayer Schering Pharma AG, respectively. Arthur J. Higgins has been Chairman of the Bayer HealthCare Executive Committee since July 1, 2004 and, since January 1, 2006, Chairman of the Board of Management of Bayer HealthCare AG.

David Hamill is Chairman and Chief Executive of ICI Paints. Born in Airdrie in 1957, he graduated from Strathclyde University with an honours degree in production engineering and management. After working for Honeywell and general Instruments, he joined Philips Semiconductors as product manager in 1986. Two years later he was appointed plant director of Philips Hazel Grove, UK.

John Goldie is originally from Coatbridge but after a lot of hard work finally made it to the dizzy heights of Airdrie where John has lived for the last 15 years. He started playing clubs locally when he was around 15/16 yrs old, progressing eventually to session work and concert hall tours with various US acts. Played jazz for about 5 years and is part of the award winning group Spirit of D’jango - well known at the time for the Renault Clio advert on TV. John now works all over the world as a solo artist mainly playing guitar festivals - his last cd was launched in Nashville at the Chet Atkins festival and he is busy all year round touring. John is planning to do some gigs locally next year and currently looking into the local scene - something he hasn’t done before. Mp3 clips are downloadable from the website. Check it out.. The town is fairly well equipped with facilities. A refurbished swimming baths (The John Smith Pool) was opened in 1997 and the Sports Centre (Airdrie Leisure Centre) has been upgraded. Also with the recent completion of the Airdrie football stadium ( New Broomfield Stadium ) the town is well catered for sporting options. There are also 2 golf courses (Airdrie Golf Club and Easter Moffat)

Hospitals

The main district General Hospital in Airdrie is Monklands DGH in Monkscourt Avenue. There are other smaller cottage- type hospitals (e.g. Wester Moffat Hospital) around the town but with no accident or emergency facilities. Several surgeries are available also. These tend now to be part of the main Health Centre group and under one roof. St Andrews Hospice for the terminally ill is also situated in Airdrie (in Hallcraig Street).

Transport

Airdrie has a good transport network of services, especially to Glasgow. The main bus terminal situated in the town centre has services to all surrounding districts, but to go further afield, it is usually necessary to travel to Hamilton (6 miles from Airdrie) to board inter-city routes. There is a local train service to Glasgow Queen Street (every 20 minutes) and again, all mainline services tend to go from Glasgow throughout the UK. Several taxi firms operate in the town and should have no problems providing service to Glasgow or Edinburgh airports.

Restaurants

Di Maggio’s (Airdrie) - Vibrant, bustling Italian pizzeria

Trattoria Guidi - Popular Italian restaurant in Coatdyke

Shopping

The shopping experience is slightly limited due to the towns’ size. The local market has just closed down to make way for a new shopping centre. We have Morrisons and Somerfield (now closed) as the main supermarkets along with Aldi and LidL. Otherwise there is a Woolworth’s and a small retail park (Focus DIY, Curry’s, Argos, Lidl). Nearby in Coatbridge there is a B&Q. Many locals will make the trip to Glasgow for any major shopping trips as the city offers extensive shopping facilities and is on a par with any major city for choice.
