I lived in an area of Aidrie called Burnfoot. This was called after the local farm ,Burnfoot farm. I went to school in the 60’s with two off the farmers sons. The family were called Hamiltonand they had three sons John, George and Jim. I do not remember ia ‘burnfeet’ but it might be just how it was spoken

  2. Veronica Says:

I live in Burnfoot and George who used to live on burnfoot farm now has a farm of his own (but still does the milk round here) My milkman! I still know some people round here called black and frame - may be related?

    Its a small world.

Dear Alistair and Veronica, - please pass on my message to those in the area with surnames as below - thank you.
Since I posted the original message, I have purchased Gavin BLACK’s will (d.4th Sep 1849) and it says Burnfoot, and it seems my G.G.Grandmother Janet BLACK was married on the farm even though her father had passed on by 1855 when she was married.
It lists cash in various bank accounts and then the value of the “Farm Stocking, Crop, Household functions, & Plenishing, in and about the farm and farmhouse of Burnfoot as per valuation by Messrs Robert THORN, Gavin MASON & William BLACK” These men may be relatives, I don’t know. Gavin BLACK’s personal estate added up to (pounds) 540.19.10 (pence) and the will has Betsy MUIR’s signature which is super for us to have.
1855 marriage at Burnfoot of Glaud BROWNLIE 29yrs b.Hamilton & Jean BLACK 22yrs b.Old Monkland Glaud BROWNLIE’s residence is “Portland Place, Hamilton. Jean BLACK’s residence is ‘New Monkland’.
Glaud’s parents are ‘?Claud BROWNLEE, Farmer, and Janet, Maiden surname FRAME
Jean’s parents are Gavin BLACK, Farmer (deceased) and Betsy Maiden surname MUIR
Witnesses: James BROWNLEE and David SHANKS Minister: Robert ARCHIBALD Ch of Scotland

  7. Mary Says:

My g g grandparents were married on 18 Dec. 1840 in Libberton, Lanarkshire (from OPR). Their names were John Gemmel and Margaret Aitken and were both servants at Burnfoot. I would be grateful for any information about them or about Burnfoot. Is Burnfoot an area, village, house or what?

  8. brendamac Says:

    Dear Mary,
Firstly, thank you for the information regarding your GGGrandparents. I have phoned my cousin who is doing that line of the family and she is sure there are AITKEN’s in our GEMMELL line but I will need to post another message when I hear from her.
Secondly, regarding the query of what is BURNFOOT, as I understand it from my GGGrandfather, Gavin BLACK’s will, he had a farm called BURNFOOT but I am unclear as to wether the Farm was there first and a village grew up around it or the other way round if you see what I mean.
    More soon.
    Cheers,
    Brenda

  9. brendamac Says:

    Dear Mary,
My cousin has let me know that she can’t quite connect your folk up to ours but is working on it.
I think that they would be connected as we have found it very common for relatives to help and offer work to other relatives.
    Cheers,
    Brenda

My Father was born in Scotland, though he was concieved in the United States around 1910. He was the youngest of 8. When I was growing up my Aunt told me that the family had come from Airdrie. The family eventually settled in Mineola, New York on Long Island about 20 miles from New York City. I understand that my Grandfather was a veterinarian. I would like to find out more about my relatives in Scotland and elsewhere. I can be reached at oldpool@yahoo.com. Thank you!

  12. Susan Says:

My g.g. grandfather was a gamekeeper - trying to find out where. He had at least one child born at/in Carcew(?) Burnfoot. Does anyone know what the Carcew (?) may be. Also whether Burnfoot Farm was big enough to warrant having a gamekeeper?
