My g.g. grandfather was a gamekeeper – trying to find out where. He had at least one child born at/in Carcew(?) Burnfoot. Does anyone know what the Carcew (?) may be. Also whether Burnfoot Farm was big enough to warrant having a gamekeeper?

My Father was born in Scotland, though he was concieved in the United States around 1910. He was the youngest of 8. When I was growing up my Aunt told me that the family had come from Airdrie. The family eventually settled in Mineola, New York on Long Island about 20 miles from New York City. I understand that my Grandfather was a veterinarian. My cousin has let me know that she can’t quite connect your folk up to ours but is working on it.
I think that they would be connected as we have found it very common for relatives to help and offer work to other relatives.

Dear Mary,
Firstly, thank you for the information regarding your GGGrandparents. I have phoned my cousin who is doing that line of the family and she is sure there are AITKEN’s in our GEMMELL line but I will need to post another message when I hear from her.
Secondly, regarding the query of what is BURNFOOT, as I understand it from my GGGrandfather, Gavin BLACK’s will, he had a farm called BURNFOOT but I am unclear as to wether the Farm was there first and a village grew up around it or the other way round if you see what I mean.

My g g grandparents were married on 18 Dec. 1840 in Libberton, Lanarkshire (from OPR). Their names were John Gemmel and Margaret Aitken and were both servants at Burnfoot. I would be grateful for any information about them or about Burnfoot. Is Burnfoot an area, village, house or what?
