The town is fairly well equipped with facilities. A refurbished swimming baths (The John Smith Pool) was opened in 1997 and the Sports Centre (Airdrie Leisure Centre) has been upgraded. Also with the recent completion of the Airdrie football stadium ( New Broomfield Stadium ) the town is well catered for sporting options. There are also 2 golf courses (Airdrie Golf Club and Easter Moffat)

Hospitals

The main district General Hospital in Airdrie is Monklands DGH in Monkscourt Avenue. There are other smaller cottage- type hospitals (e.g. Wester Moffat Hospital) around the town but with no accident or emergency facilities. Several surgeries are available also. These tend now to be part of the main Health Centre group and under one roof. St Andrews Hospice for the terminally ill is also situated in Airdrie (in Hallcraig Street).

Transport

Airdrie has a good transport network of services, especially to Glasgow. The main bus terminal situated in the town centre has services to all surrounding districts, but to go further afield, it is usually necessary to travel to Hamilton (6 miles from Airdrie) to board inter-city routes. There is a local train service to Glasgow Queen Street (every 20 minutes) and again, all mainline services tend to go from Glasgow throughout the UK. Several taxi firms operate in the town and should have no problems providing service to Glasgow or Edinburgh airports.

Restaurants

Di Maggio’s (Airdrie) – Vibrant, bustling Italian pizzeria

Trattoria Guidi – Popular Italian restaurant in Coatdyke

Shopping

The shopping experience is slightly limited due to the towns’ size. The local market has just closed down to make way for a new shopping centre. We have Morrisons as the main supermarket along with Aldi and LidL. Otherwise there is a small retail park (Curry’s, Argos, Lidl). Nearby in Coatbridge there is a B&Q. Many locals will make the trip to Glasgow for any major shopping trips as the city offers extensive shopping facilities and is on a par with any major city for choice.
